SPAN 200. Reading Skills. 0 crs. A review course to prepare graduate students in other departments for the Graduate Reading Examination. This course reviews the essentials of Spanish grammar with intensive vocabulary expansion in the student’s major field of concentration.

SPAN 201. Research and Composition. 3 crs. Advanced course in composition which prepares graduate students to write book reviews, original essays, term papers and theses. Methods and techniques of graduate research, preparation and development of bibliography are also studied.

SPAN 203. Literary Criticism. 3 crs. An introduction to major theories and practices in literary criticism.

SPAN 210. Medieval Spanish Literature. 3 crs. Study of the evolution of old Spanish through an analysis of literary texts.

SPAN 220. Drama and Poetry of the Golden Age. 3 crs. Study of the poetry and drama of the Golden Age.

SPAN 221. Prose of the Golden Age. 3 crs. Study of prose genres of the Golden Age, with emphasis on individual research.

SPAN 230. Eighteenth Century Spanish Literature. 3 crs. Study of the major works of 18th century Spanish writers.

SPAN 235. Nineteenth Century Spanish Literature. 3 crs. Study of the drama, poetry, and prose of the Nineteenth century within the historical and social context of the period.

SPAN 240. Twentieth Century Spanish Literature. 3 crs. Study of the drama, poetry, and prose of the twentieth century within the historical and social context of the period.

SPAN 250. Literature of Spanish America I. 3 crs. Study of the development of Spanish American literature from the colonial period to Modernismo.

SPAN 251. Literature of Spanish America II. 3 crs. Study of the development of Spanish American literature from Modernismo to the present.

SPAN 260. Afro-Hispanic Literature I. 3 crs. Study of the Afro-Hispanic heritage and contributions to literature and culture.

SPAN 263. Afro-Hispanic Narrative. 3 crs. Study of works by twentieth-century Afro-Hispanic novelists and essayists.

SPAN 265. Afro-Hispanic Poetry. 3 crs. Study of Afro-Hispanic poetry and its authors, themes, imagery, and sociohistorical background.

SPAN 270. History of the Spanish Language. 3 crs. Advanced course in linguistics tracing the origins of the Spanish language.

SPAN 271. Introduction to General Spanish Linguistics. 3 crs. Study of the phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of the Spanish language.

SPAN 272. Spanish Phonology. 3 crs. Study of the sound system and properties of the Spanish language. Prereq.: SPAN 271 or permission of instructor.

SPAN 278. Spanish-English Translation. 3 crs. Introduction to and training in translation and interpretation from Spanish into English. Will aim to expand the student’s vocabulary in both Spanish and English.

SPAN 287. Educational Methods. 3 crs. Examination of the history and philosophies of second language teaching with an emphasis on developing materials and techniques for classroom management.

SPAN 289. Foreign Language Testing. 3 crs. Development and use of teacher-made and standard tests in foreign language teaching.

SPAN 290, 291. Independent Studies. 1-6 crs. Independent courses which give academic credit to students who initiate and complete an original research project abroad as a part of their graduate program.

SPAN 310. Medieval Spanish Literature. 3 crs. Study of individual authors and works from the twelfth century to the fifteenth century.

SPAN 311. El Romancero. 3 crs. An approach to this literary form with all the historic, social and aesthetic implications.

SPAN 312. Analysis of Medieval Texts. 3 crs. Study of the evolution of Old Spanish through an analysis of medieval texts.
