SOCI 289. Sociology of Work. 3 crs. Focuses on social aspects of the organization of work in industrial society; relations between cultural and industrial organization, and interrelationships among industrial, political, familial, and educational institutions.

SOCI 300. Sociological Theory I. 3 crs. Survey of early social theories and examination of theoretical contributions of the nineteenth-century sociologists.

SOCI 301. Sociological Theory II. 3 crs. Continuation of SOCI 300, with concentration on early twentieth century and contemporary sociological theorists.

SOCI 310. Sociological Research I. 3 crs. Present-day methods of research in sociology, with emphasis on quantitative methods.

SOCI 319. Advanced Statistics II. 3 crs. Focus on the application of multivariate statistical methods to social data, employing causal and factor analysis, and techniques for cross-tabulated data, including logic analysis. Prereq.: 025-219.

SOCI 340. Urban Society. 3 crs. Examination of the various theoretical processes of urbanization and change and their relationships to empirical works.

SOCI 341. Urbanization and Development. 3 crs. Continuation of SOCI 340.

SOCI 355. Political Sociology. 3 crs. Examination of the exercise of power within and by political institutions.

SOCI 370. Criminological Theory. 3 crs. Emphasis on representative theories of the structural, symbolic-interactionist, culture-conflict, and personality perspectives.

SOCI 386. Social Epidemiology. 3 crs. Examination of the social etiology of illness, disease, and health; identifies basic concepts; and analyzes social class and ethnicity in social epidemiology.

SOCI 392. Perspectives in Sociology. 3 crs. Examination of major issues in sociology, with emphasis on the discussion of these as they relate to theoretical problems and challenges in the field.

SOCI 400. Contributions of Black Sociologists. 3 crs. Review and assessment of the contributions of black sociologists to the discipline. Gives special attention to leading figures, their major works, and to historical and sociological conditions which influenced their numbers and the character of their work.

SOCI 420. Advanced Social Psychology I. 3 crs. Focus on group properties and their effects upon the relations of group members, the reciprocal relationship between the individual and the group, and collective interaction in emergencies and social movements. Prereq.: 025-020.

SOCI 430 Demographic Method I. 3 crs. Presentation of techniques of population estimation and projection, including the interpretation and application of life table techniques.

SOCI 432. Social Demography of the Ghetto. 3 crs. Examination of the growth and composition of urban black communities with special attention to migration, fertility, and mortality patterns.

SOCI 435. Population Growth and Development. 3 crs. Survey of evidence concerning economic and social determinants of population growth in developed and Third World countries and examines the demographic transition theory.

SOCI 436. Women In the Labor Force. 3 crs. A comparative examination of the work of women in the perspective of national and international political, social and economic organization.

SOCI 441. Seminar: Urban Policy Formation. 3 crs. Examination of the impact of race, class, and power on the formation of public policy concerning such public services as housing, transportation, and environment.

SOCI 460. Seminar: Analysis of Race Relations I. 3 crs. Critical analysis of past and present theoretical approaches to the study of race relations, with emphasis on adequacy in accounting for changes in race relations at the psychological, sociopsychological, and sociological levels.

SOCI 471. Race, Ethnicity, Crime. 3 crs. Analysis of race and ethnicity as social factors in the study of crime.

SOCI 487. Social Psychology of Aging and Health. 3 crs. Intensive study of the demographic, theoretical, and methodological issues in the social psychology of aging and health.

SOCI 501. Theory Construction. 3 crs. Definition of theory and the logical structure of sociological theories and analysis of the role of concepts, relations between variables, and operationalization in constructing and testing theoretical formulations.

SOCI 503. Sociology of Knowledge. 3 crs. Examination of the development and utilization and transmission of knowledge.

SOCI 510. Experimental Research. 3 crs. Detailed study of procedures, problems, and issues in conducting experimental research.

SOCI 511. Survey Research I. 3 crs. Examination of research designs in survey research, sampling, questionnaire construction, interviewing, coding, data reduction, and analysis of survey data. Prereqs.: One graduate course in statistics and two courses in methods of social research.
