PHED 300. Methods and Foundations. 3 crs. Methods and techniques of the research process; emphasis on application and proper standards for writing research papers.

PHED 301. History and Philosophy of Applied Life Studies. 3 crs. Historical and systematic study of the principal concepts and problems of Health and Safety Education, Leisure Studies, and Sports Science.

PHED 302. Supervision in Physical Education and Athletics. 3 crs. The principles and practice of executive management in the general, specific, and technical constructs of institutional health, physical education, and sports.

PHED 303. Statistics for Research in Applied Life Studies. 3 crs. Application of standard statistical methods to physical education and sports problems. Prereqs.: PHED 300 and consent of instructor.

PHED 306. Curriculum Construction in Physical Education. 3 crs. Formulation of instructional courses, units, programs, and curricula in systematic fashion for concrete in-depth learning, behavior analysis, and research.

PHED 307. Organization and Administration of Applied Life Studies. 3 crs. Analysis of administrative and organizational principles and processes relating to physical education.

PHED 315. Developmental and Remedial Kinesis. 3 crs. Discussion of specialized and adapted physical modalities for aiding handicapped children and adults in developing to their full potentials.

PHED 316. Biomechanics of Human Movement. 3 crs. A scientific basis for the understanding and investigation of biomechanical aspects of the human body.

PHED 324. Psychomotor Behavior Analysis. 3 crs. Intensive study of motor skill acquisition, with emphasis on neural conditioning, transfer, feedback, motivation, learning, retention, and forgetting.

PHED 327. Work Physiology I. 3 crs. Examines the physiological and nutritional aspects of energy for physical activity. The relationship between physical performance and body composition is also covered.

PHED 328. Work Physiology II. 3 crs. The physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular, endocrine, and temperature regulation systems under the stress of exercise and work are discussed.

PHED 329. Advanced Measurement of Human Performance. 3 crs. Analysis of methods of measuring and evaluating human performance. Prereqs.: PHED 327 and PHED 328.

PHED 334. Sociology of Sport in Contemporary Perspective. 3 crs. A study of social organization and the role of individuals and groups in sport situations.

PHED 335. Psychology of Sport. 3 crs. Exploration of the personality factors, including—but not limited to—motivation, aggression, and emotion as they affect sports participation.

PHED 340. Independent Research. 1-3 crs. Emphasis on creative scientific discovery through independent research. Prereqs.: Degree student with regular status and consent from the director of graduate studies.

PHED 341. Independent Project. 3 crs. Required for non-thesis option students. Emphasis placed on creative discovery through independent research. Prereq.: Regular status, consent of director of graduate studies.

PHED 342. Independent Study. 2 crs. Critique and exploration of research in the area of special interest. Prereq.: Permission of instructor.

PHED 350. Master of Science Thesis Research I. 3 crs. Thesis guidance for M.S. students.

PHED 351. Master of Science Thesis Research II. 3 crs. Thesis guidance for M.S. students.

PHED 360. Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation. 3 crs. Examination of the planning procedures for therapeutic recreation programs and the development of leadership skills required for activities of such programs. Students will be afforded the opportunity to examine the operation of agencies such as Family Services, VA Hospital, Special Olympics as well as agencies which provide wheelchair sports, blood drives, etc. Prereq.: Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation.

PHED 365. Administration of Leisure Services. 3 crs. Study of the organizational patterns and administrative problems involved in the delivery and administration of leisure service.

PHED 370. Recreation and Resource Development. 3 crs. Exploration of the inter-relationship of resources, people and institutional factors in the development of recreation resources.

PHED 380. Seminar: School Health Programs. 3 crs. An in-depth look into school health programs.

PHED 385. Community Organization For Health. 3 crs. Examination of vital health statistics, population dynamics, family planning, public health law, and legislative action.

PHED 390. Administration and Supervision of Safety Education. 3 crs. A course which prepares students to assume responsibility for safety education and accident prevention programming in school, industry, or public service.

PHED 399. Seminar in Applied Life Studies. No cr. A forum for the presentation of student and faculty research.

PHED 400. Special Topics in Applied Life Studies. 3 crs. A forum providing faculty members with a mechanism for offering advanced study opportunities for students in Applied Life Studies.
