French Courses

Courses are offered on an alternating basis. New courses are under development for several proposed Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs.

FREN 200. Reading Skills. 0 crs. Review course to prepare graduate students in other departments for the Graduate Reading Examination. Includes the essentials of French grammar, with intensive vocabulary expansion in the student’s major field and concentration. FREN 201. Research and Composition. 3 crs. Advanced course in composition which prepares graduate students to write critical book reviews, original essays, term papers, and theses. Methods and techniques of graduate research, preparation and development of bibilography are also studied.

FREN 203. Literary Criticism. 3 crs. Introduction to major theories and practices in literary criticism.

FREN 220. Seventeenth Century French Literature. 3 crs. Drama and prose readings from Pascal, Bossuet Mme de Sevigne, Boileau Mme de Lafayette, La Bruyere, Corneille, Moliere, Racine.

FREN 225. Eighteenth Century French Literature. 3 crs. Survey course covering the philosophical and social ideology of the Age of Enlightenment in France.

FREN 230. Nineteenth Century French Literature. 3 crs. Representative selection of writings from the literary movements of the period.

FREN 240. Twentieth Century French Literature. 3 crs. A study of major literary currents and writers from 1900 to 1970.

FREN 250. Franco-Caribbean Civilization and Literature. 3 crs. A study of socio-political and literary trends in French-speaking Caribbean countries.

FREN 260. Franco-African Civilization and Literature. 3 crs. A study of historical, cultural and literary evolution of French-speaking African countries.

FREN 270. History of the French Language. 3 crs. The evolution of the French language from its origin.

FREN 271. Introduction to General French Linguistics. 3 crs. Analysis of the phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of French.

FREN 272. French Phonology. 3 crs. Intensive study of the sounds of the French language through symbols and spellings.

FREN 278. French-English Translation. 3 crs. Introduction to and training in translation and interpretation from French into English. Will aim to expand the student’s vocabulary in both French and English. FREN 287. Educational Methods. 3 crs. Introduction to pedagogical methods, materials and techniques in foreign language instruction.

FREN 289. Foreign Language Testing. 3 crs. Involves development and use of teacher-made and standard tests in foreign language teaching.

FREN 290, 291. Independent Studies. 1-6 crs. Independent courses which give academic credit to students who initiate and complete an original research project abroad as a part of the graduate program.

FREN 294. Francophonie Through Film. 3 crs. Study of France and French-speaking countries through film, from cultural, sociological and technical point of view.

FREN 320. Seventeenth Century French Drama. 3 crs. Study of the age of the romanesque, paroque, and classic theaters in the works of Corneille, Moliere, and Racine.

FREN 321. Seventeenth Century French Prose. 3 crs. Involves the evolution of French prose, including works by Descantes, Pascal, La Fontaine, de Sevigne, and La Rocnefoucauld.

FREN 325. Eighteenth Century French Novel. 3 crs. Study of the development of the French novel.

FREN 326. Eighteenth Century French Essay and Theatre. 3 crs. Study of Voltaire, Rousseau, and Diderot in their nonfiction prose works.

FREN 330. The Nineteenth Century French Novel I. 3 crs. Emphasis on Balzac, Stendane, and Flaubert: Romanticism and Realism.

FREN 331. The Nineteenth Century French Novel II. 3 crs. Emphasis on Zola and Maupassant. The novel in the late nineteenth century: Realism and Naturalism.

FREN 332. Nineteenth Century French Poetry. 3 crs. In-depth study of representative poetry of romanticism, I’art pour l’art, and symbolism. FREN 333. Nineteenth Century French Drama. 3 crs. The works of French playwrights with emphasis on individual research.

FREN 340. Twentieth Century French Poetry. 3 crs. Covers the genesis of contemporary poetry-its main preoccupations, its evolution, its crisis, and its orientation-and comprises poets from Guillaume Apolinaire to the present.

FREN 341. Twentieth Century French Novel I. 3 crs. In-depth study of le roman de recherehe through the works of such authors as Proust, Gide, Malraux, and Sartre.

FREN 342. Twentieth Century French Novel II. 3 crs. Critical study of the newest trends of the French novel.

FREN 343. Twentieth Century French Drama. 3 crs. Analysis of major dramatic works of such modern French playwrights as Anouilh, Beckett, Camus, Ionesco and Sartre.

FREN 351. Caribbean Literature in French: Poetry. 3 crs. Examines the evolution of Franco-Caribbean poetry in its historical and cultural contexts through reading and analysis.

FREN 352. Caribbean Literature in French: Novel. 3 crs. Examines the evolution of the Caribbean novel in French in its historical and cultural context.

FREN 360. African Literature in French: Novel. 3 crs. Reading and analysis of novels by African writers of French expression.

FREN 361. African Literature in French: Poetry. 3 crs. Reading and analysis of the poetry of African writers of French expression.

FREN 362. Afro-French Theatre. 3 crs. Selected dramatic works by African and Caribbean playwrights of French expression.

FREN 363. Afro-French Folklore. 3 crs. Presents Afro-French literature and its sources in folklore, religion, and music.

FREN 364. Women in African Literature in French. 3 crs. Examines the role of the African woman as seen through selected novels of major Francophone writers.

FREN 370. Advanced History, Evolution and Structure of the French Language. 3 crs. Research-oriented course dealing with special areas or topics in the evolution of the French language. Prereq.: FREN 270 or consent of the instructor.

FREN 380. Black Literature in the Americas. 3 crs. A critical comparative study of Black literatures in French, Spanish and English. Lectures, readings, and research will have interdisciplinary orientations.

FREN 381. Pan-Caribbean Literature. 3 crs. Comparative study of literature by and about blacks in the Spanish, French, and English-speaking Caribbean.

FREN 387. Trends in Foreign Language Research. 1-3 crs. Study of research trends and developments in foreign language teaching and learning.

FREN 388. Educational Technology in Second Language Teaching. 3 crs. Investigation of the use of computer and programmed instruction in foreign language teaching.

FREN 397. Master’s Thesis in French Language and Literature. 1 cr.

FREN 398. Master’s Thesis in French Language and Literature. 2 crs.

FREN 399. Master’s Thesis in French Language and Literature. 3 crs.
