Examines elementary principles involved in conducting educational and behavioral research. HUDE 201. Human Development. 3 crs. Covers the principles of growth and development, with the individual seen as an energy system having physiological and psychosocial aspects. HUDE 202. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Human Development I Childhood and Adolescence. 3 crs. Examines theory and research on infant, child and adolescent development from interdisciplinary perspective with particular emphasis on ecological, cultural and psychological influences. HUDE 203. Evaluation Strategies. 3 crs. Presents methods of measuring and evaluating change in educational and institutional programs. Includes grant proposal writing and grantsmanship skills. HUDE 204. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Human Development II Adulthood and Aging. 3 crs. Examines theory and research on adult development and aging from an interdisciplinary perspective with particular emphasis on ecological, cultural and psychosocial influences. HUDE 205. Introduction to Statistical Methods. 3 crs. Deals with descriptive and inferential techniques, including central tendency, variability, correlation, and tests based on sampling distributions. HUDE 208. Familial Structures and Functions. 3 crs. Presents a conceptual framework and major contributions to studying familial functioning across the life cycle. HUDE 210. Parentology: Parenthood and Parenting. 3 crs. Examines theories and research relating to parenting and parenthood across the lifespan. A major focus is on maximizing positive parenting attitudes and behavior and healthy childrearing using various approaches for working with individuals. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of effective environments that promote positive parenting and parent involvement in various contextual settings. HUDE 212. Black Families and Public Policy. 3 crs. Describes and analyzes origins and trends of public policies and their interface with Black families, using a case study approach in several areas: education, employment, child care, health, criminal justice, and social welfare. The roles of the federal, state and local governments. Black family advocate organizations, and research on Black families are used to illustrate policy initiatives. An emphasis is placed on maximizing Black family development through successful policy development, implementation, and evaluation. HUDE 214. Developmental Appraisal of the Child. 3 crs. Measures cognitive/personality/social behavior from infancy to adolescence and analyzes the sociocultural factors affecting testing. HUDE 216. Gerontology. 3 crs. Uses a developmental and cultural approach to adolescence, with emphasis on contemporary problems, cultural causation, and resolution. HUDE 232. Seminar. Adolescence. 2 crs. Explores the intra/inter-sociocultural and psychological aspects of adolescence and young adulthood. HUDE 236. Seminar: Infant Growth and Behavior. 2 crs. Analysis of cognitive/social/personality development from birth to two years, including parent-infant interaction. HUDE 240. Introduction to Counseling and Psychotherapy. 3 crs. Overview of the counseling profession, with emphasis on the counseling component, including theories, issues, techniques, and research. HUDE 241. Techniques and Theories of Psychological Counseling. 3 crs. Involves counseling and guidance techniques, both verbal and nonverbal; counseling theories; and analysis of counseling tapes.
