COSD 613. Language for the Young Deaf Child. 3 crs. Study of language patterns of the young deaf child, including methods of description, analysis and intervention, and the legal aspects of deaf education. Prereqs.: COSD 362 and COSD 267.

COSD 680. Differential Audiologic Assessment. 3 crs. Examination of advanced tests, techniques, and procedures (beyond the traditional pure tone and speech threshold tests) used to assess the auditory system from “pinna to cortex.”

COSD 681. Electrophysiologic Measures. 3 crs. Principles, theories, and methods of testing the human balance system and brain stem integrity. Prereqs.: COSD 562 and COSD 581.

COSD 701. Experimental Research in Communications. 3 crs. Involves basic research methods and procedures and critical analysis of selected research documents. Prereq.: COSD 590.

COSD 702. Research Design, Data Collection, and Analysis. 3 crs. Presents basic research designs in communications, including statistical and computer procedures for analyzing data. Spring semester only. Prereq.: COSD 701.

Doctoral Courses of Study

COSD 703. Seminar in Experimental Research in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. 3 crs. Examines experimental research paradigms currently used in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Taught every other Fall semester.

COSD 708. Seminar in Child Language. 3 crs. Review and analysis of issues and research on language acquisition in children. Fall semester only. Prereq.: HUCO 609 or equivalent.

COSD 757. Seminar in Language and Processing Disorders in Children. 3 crs. Current research on the nature, course, diagnosis and management of language processing disorders in children. Prereqs.: COSD 758 and COSD 575. Taught every other Spring semester.

COSD 759. Seminar in Linguistic and Cultural Diversity and Communication Disorders. 3 crs. Issues and research on cultural/linguistic variation with emphasis on identifying and treating communication disorders. Taught every other Spring semester.

COSD 760. Seminar in Speech Science. 3 crs. Theoretical and practical laboratory analysis of normal and deviant speech production and theories of speech production and perception. Prereq.: COSD 262 or equivalent. Taught every otherFall semester.

COSD 762. Seminar in Learning Disabilities. 3 crs. Analysis of contemporary data and theories relative to etiology, examination, and management of learning disabilities. Prereq.: COSD 561, COSD 563, COSD 565, COSD 567, COSD 569, COSD 571, COSD 573, and COSD 575.

COSD 764. Seminar in Neurological Mechanisms in Human Communication. 3 crs. Examination of the neurological bases of communication, with special reference to auditory, proprioceptive, symbolic, and cognitive functions. Prereqs.: COSD 561, COSD 563, COSD 565, COSD 567, COSD 569, COSD 571, COSD 573, and COSD 575.

COSD 768. Seminar in Neuromotor Disorders of Communication. 3 crs. Research on disorders of speech, rhythm, voice, and swallowing secondary to neurological dysfunction. Prereq.: COSD 764. Taught every other Spring semester.

COSD 770. Topical Seminar in Audiology. 3 crs. Comprehensive study of the literature on selected topics of contemporary interest in audiology. Fall semester only. Prereq.: Consent of instructor.

COSD 771. Seminar in Communication Disorders in Aging. 3 crs. Research on normal and pathological conditions associated with aging. Prereq.: COSD 764. Taught every other Fall semester.

COSD 772. Seminar in Communication Disorders Associated with Traumatic Head Injury. 3 crs. Research on the nature, course, diagnosis and rehabilitation of communication disorders associated with traumatic head injury. Prereqs.: COSD 768 and COSD 767. Taught every other Spring semester.

COSD 790. Independent Study (Doctoral). 3 crs. each. Independent program of study with readings of particular interest to the student. Prereq.: Approval of study outline by selected instructor and department chairman.

COSD 791. Independent Study (Doctoral). 1 cr. each. Independent program of study with readings of particular interest to the student. Prereq.: Approval of study outline by selected instructor and department chairman.

COSD 795 through HUCO 798. Dissertation. 3 crs. each. Supervised execution of the doctoral dissertation. Prereq.: Successful completion of doctoral qualifying examination and admission to candidacy.

COSD 799. Dissertation. 1 cr. Supervised execution of the doctoral dissertation, taken only as needed. Prereqs.: COSD 795, COSD 796, COSD 797, and COSD 798.
