A concentrated area study of the classical art of West Africa. An examination of 20th-century European and American styles of painting, printmaking, sculpture, and architecture with emphasis upon problems of style and subject matter. ARHI 286. African-American Art I. 3 crs. An examination of the growth, role, and evolution of the Black American artist from the colonial era to 1945 within the framework of American art. Fall semester only. Research in African Art. 3 crs. The course offers the graduate student an opportunity to acquire basic research techniques and apply them in researching topics in the art of ancient African civilization, traditional African societies, and contemporary Africa. An examination and analysis of the historical basis and the politico-economic implications of art produced for non-traditional use in Africa. Developments in Africa’s new art forms in relation to socio-economic development are examined and discussed. Contributions and achievements of outstanding individual artists, art movements, and art institutions are discussed against the background of Pan-African cultural orientations and the world art scene. The history of Italian and Northern Renaissance art from the thirteenth through the sixteenth century with added emphasis placed upon problems of style and iconography. ARHI 295.
