Ethics and Human Sexuality. 3 crs. Examines sexual life styles in contemporary America and their impact upon the traditional family structure, emphasizing such areas as open marriage and communal living. ETRL-300. The Modern Missionary Movement. 3 crs. Reviews historical and theological origins of Christian mission, with special attention to related development in African and Afro-American churches. ETRL-305. Contemporary Issues and Christian Social Ethics. 3 crs. Discussion and ethical analysis of contemporary moral issues from a Christian perspective. Topics will include abortion, apartheid, capital punishment, drug abuse, human sexuality, peace and poverty. ETRL-320. Biblical Ethics. 3 crs. Surveys the ethical teachings of the Bible. Church Ministries and Liberation Ethics. 3 crs. Examines from a Christian perspective, selected narrative questions generated by movement toward human equality in contemporary ecclesial communities; ordination of women; problems of language and gender; alternative models of ETRL-351. Ethics and Politics in the Black Community. 3 crs. Study of black participation on the American political scene from historical, current, and theoretical perspectives, along with theological grounds for political involvement. ETRL-352. Constructive Christian Ethics. 3 crs. Focuses on the problem of Christian responsibility and political involvement, with special attention to the nature of man, the function of alternate world views, power, justice, and freedom in light of theological perspectives. ETRL-370. The Afro-American Ethos and Ethic. 3 crs. Examination of various descriptions of the collective character and moral perspectives of the Afro-American people. Readings from Walker, Turner, DuBois, Bethune, Hurston, Frazier, Thurman and others. ETRL-375. African-American Spirituality. 3 crs. ETRL-385. Ethics in Contemporary African American Cinema. 3 crs. This course attempts to provide an overview of contemporary African American cinema from the perspective of religion and society. Given the impact of these films upon African American youth and community life, the analysis and interpretation of the cinematic portrayals of black life from an ethical perspective should enhance the possibilities for fruitful dialogue with youth in the church and community. ETRL-400. Integrated Health Care: Ethical and Theological Issues and Practical Problems. 3 crs. Interdisciplinary course which analyzes: the meaning of health, healing, and healers, issues in health care, ethical quandaries in medicine, the effect of health care decisions upon individuals, their families and society. Special attention given to underlying questions in the roles of pastor, nurse, and physician in health care. Enrollment limited to students in Medicine, Nursing and Divinity. ETRL-405. Directed Study in Ethics (Masters level). 3 crs. ETRL-410. Pastoral Ethics. 3 crs. Explores the ethical decision-making process in relation to the profession of pastoral ministry. The approach is to combine lecture-discussion with actual case studies each week, in order to equip students with practical and theoretical insights into ethical dilemmas faced by ministers in today’s church and society. Special attention will be given to issues of sex, money, and power in the practice of ministry. ETRL-451. Seminar in Bio-Ethics. 3 crs. Critical analysis of problems in medical ethics, with reference to doctor’s decision and patient’s freedom and analysis of such areas as abortion, family planning, and euthanasia. ETRL-495. Seminar in Feminist Ethics and Theology. 3 crs. Provides an overview of feminist scholarship in religion as well as systematic approaches to feminist ethics and theology. The womanist context and perspective will also be explored. ETRL-505. Directed Study in Ethics (Doctoral level). 3 crs. |
