This course promotes critical self-evaluation, examines individual philosophy, clarifies values, and develops moral reasoning skills. Major moral and ethical issues that arise within sports and exercise environments will be studied. PHED 147. Sports and the Media. 3 crs. Introduction to theory and practice of media forums and their relationship to the sports industry. Designed to give students an operational and technical foundation in research, print, broadcasting, and the impact of advertising and sales on production of a sports event. Guest lecturers from professional media entities, and opportunity for hands-on experiences. PHED 149. Facility Planning and Design. 3 crs. Course addresses the fundamentals of planning and design, emphasizing athletic, physical education, and recreation facilities in both rural and urban settings. Field trips and current trends in facility design and scheduling will also be explored. PHED 151. Instructor’s First Aid And Safety. 3 crs. Principles, methods and materials for teaching first aid and emergency health care. Completion of specific course requirement warrants award of American Red Cross Instructor’s Certificate. PHED 152. Methods and Materials of Health Education. 3 crs. Offers information on theory, methods and materials used in health instruction in the secondary school and provides for practical classroom experience. PHED 153. Human Sexuality. 3 crs. Develops a functional graded vocabulary, a knowledge of key facts and basic concepts, wholesome attitudes and practices, and skill in the critical analysis of basic problems and issues as they relate to human sexuality. PHED 154. Consumer Health. 3 crs. Helps students become better consumers—when choices are available in many areas of health and medicine. PHED 155. Addictive Behavior. 3 crs. Examines the historical, social, and legal impact of drugs on our society with main focus on physiological knowledge of the nervous system, the pharmacology of particular drugs and how they relate to behavior modification. PHED 157. Health Problems of Children and Youth. 3 crs. Concerns the health needs of the child while at school; the responsibility of the teacher, physician, nurse and administrator. PHED 158. Environmental and Community Health. 3 crs. Offers current information on today’s environmental health problems; examines programs and agencies (local, state and national) designed to meet community health needs. PHED 159. Health Science. 1 cr. Promotes healthier living through scientific knowledge in health, disease, mental and emotional functioning, chemical alteration and behavior, environmental health and family living. PHED 160. Women’s Health. 1 cr. Deals with the physical and mental health of women. An examination of the physician-patient relationship, gynecological exams, vaginal infections, menstruation, cancer, marriage, rape, abortion, etc. PHED 161. Crisis Health. 1 cr. Prepares students to cope with the various crisis situations that occur in their lives and depicts changes occurring during biological and social role transitions such as birth, puberty, young adulthood, marriage, divorce, illness or death of a family member, the climacteric, and old age. Introduction to perspective of the components of nutrition and weight control; covers terminology and understanding of the aspects of subject matter such as calories, carbohydrates, fats, etc. PHED 170. Seminar in Health and Safety Education. 3 crs. Relationship between behavior and safety with particular reference to the critical human factors which contribute to accidents. PHED 171. Community Organization For Health. 3 crs. A study of the goals of community health education, its principles and methods, special attention on agencies and organizations which sponsor community health programs. PHED 172.
