PHED 117. Sociological and Psychological Foundation of Sports. 3 crs. Examines the social organization and role of individuals and groups in sports, the interrelationship of sports with traditional social institutions, sports as a subsystem and its structure and sport and social problems.

PHED 118. Athletic Training I. 3 crs. An intensive introductory course on athletic injury care and prevention. Primarily focused toward the immediate assessment and treatment of the person and the person’s injury. 

PHED 119. Athletic Training II. 3 crs. Fundamentals of athletic injury rehabilitation studied. Includes the therapeutic modality use as well as theories upon which current rehabilitation techniques are based.

PHED 120. Scientific Foundations of Coaching. 1 cr. Deals with the principles and methods of coaching sports and the problems of the coach with regard to handling team members, training, and schedule planning, as well as the duties and functions of a coach.

PHED 121. Contemporary Problems in Elementary Physical Education. 3 crs. Concerned with the philosophy, objectives, curriculum, and methods of teaching physical education activities for children, grades K to 8.

PHED 122. Organization and Administration of Intramurals. 3 crs. Presents the principle, practices, and procedures of operating an intricate year-round program of intramural activities. Also focuses on the planning of special events, extramural sports, etc. Special laboratory work is required in a mini-intramural program.

PHED 123. Introduction to Research and Statistics. 3 crs. Introduces students to the various theories and techniques of research and the ways in which research is conducted. Attention is given to the presentation of research results in an acceptable form.

PHED 124. Observation and Fieldwork A. 1 cr. A supervised work experience in the field of athletic training. Intended for students majoring in the Physical Education area of emphasis.

PHED 125. Independent Study. 1-3 crs. Major students during their senior year conduct research or seek to expand knowledge in a specific subject area with the guidance of an adviser.

PHED 126. Observation and Fieldwork B. 1 cr. A supervised work experience in the field of athletic training. Intended for students majoring in the Physical Education area of emphasis.

PHED 127. Observation and Fieldwork C. 1 cr. A supervised work experience in the field of athletic training. Intended for students majoring in the Physical Education area of emphasis.

PHED 130. Exercise Physiology 2 - Neuromuscular Aspects. 3 crs. Designed to enable the student to develop a working knowledge of the neuromuscular aspects of exercise physiology. The effects of exercise on the structure and function of the neuromuscular system will be studied in detail in this course. The effects of ergogenic aids such as anabolic steroids on muscular strength will be studied. Nutrition for human performance and energy transfer in exercise will be investigated. The relative merits of isokinetic, isometric and isotonic strength training will also be examined. Upon completion of the course the student should have the ability to assess muscular strength and endurance, and then be able to prescribe individualized exercise programs for building muscular strength and endurance.

PHED 131. American Women in Sports. 3 crs. Addresses the concerns of women, sports and society within the social institution of sports. Historical, sociopsychological and physiological factors contributing to the ongoing social changes within sports are examined. Monitoring of current events and research that affect the scope of women’s participation, exploring the issues raised, and examining alternative solutions. 

PHED 133. Anthropology of Play. 3 crs. Focuses on the nature and development of sports as a cross-cultural form; categories of sports culture and cultural theory specific to play, games and sports.

PHED 134. Practicum in Sociology of Sports. 1 cr. Observation and participation under supervision in an institution, industrial, commercial or other professional sport setting.

PHED 135. Sports Psychology. 3 crs. Involves the examination of human behavior in the sports setting. Covers skill learning and performance common to both physical education and sport; the psychological factors affecting the learning and performance of physical skills and how individuals are affected by both internal and external factors.

PHED 136. Practicum in Psychology of Sports. 1 cr. Observation and participation under supervision in an institution, industrial, commercial or other professional sports setting.

PHED 137. Seminar of Psychology of Sports. 3 crs. Relationship between behavior and sports with particular reference to critical psychological human factors which contribute to sports performance.

PHED 139. Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription Practicum. 3 crs. Designed to enable the student to gain practical exposure to the many facets of fitness assessment and exercise prescription. The course will be based on guidelines for exercise testing and prescription recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine. Students will be exposed to and/or participate in the administration of the following: exercise stress tests, EKG’s, blood pressure screening, step test, muscular strength and endurance assessment, flexibility testing and other tests which are used to assess fitness. Students will prescribe, conduct and participate in fitness programs designed to elicit both aerobic and muscular training effects. Each student will be required to demonstrate a working knowledge of the “FITSCAN” computer program for assessing fitness and prescribing exercise. To fulfill the practicum requirement of the course, students will work in a center which deals with some aspect of the fitness industry. 

PHED 140. Human Growth and Development. 3 crs. Provides a study of the biological, psychological, and social factors which influence the growth and development of the individual.

PHED 144. Sports Law

PHED 145. Sports Marketing. 3 crs. This course provides an understanding of sports and the marketing of events and products, and creates a moral practice and standard when targeting a product or population. Theory identification and practical involvement will be merged to enhance the experience and opportunity to contribute into the multi-billion dollar sports industry.
