Water Safety Instruction is an American Red Cross course specifically designed to certify individuals 17 years of age and older as American Red Cross swimming instructors. PHED 002. Beginning Swimming. 1 cr. Designed to teach individuals to swim, including such basic skills to make them safe in deep water as floating in a prone position as well as supine position, breath control, and rhythmic breathing. PHED 003. Advanced Beginning Swimming. 1 cr. Increases the skill of the individual by adding to skills learned in the beginner’s course and prepares the student for additional water safety training by introducing skills that improve stamina and basic coordination. PHED 004. Intermediate Swimming. 1 cr. Provides the student the opportunity to learn the elements of good swimming. PHED 005. Swimmers. 1 cr. Increases the student’s endurance and versatility in the water providing opportunities to coordinate the parts of a stroke into whole parts. PHED 006. Life Guarding. 1 cr. Teaches the necessary skills to enable the student to save a life in case of a water accident. Distance swimming for developing strength and endurance is practiced, and the theory of water safety is studied. Practice is mandatory. PHED 007. Volleyball. 1 cr. Designed to develop a thorough knowledge of volleyball skills, rules, and procedures; embodies individual skills and team skills. PHED 008. Restrictive Activity I. 1 cr. A program of physical activity for individuals with physical, social, and psychological limitations who may not safely or successfully participate in regular, unrestricted physical education, determined by doctors of the University Health Center. PHED 009. Slimnastics. 1 cr. Develops proper body alignment producing improved motor mechanics, poise and elasticity of movement. PHED 011. Weight Training. 1 cr. PHED 013. Slimnastics II. 1 cr. An Aerobics exercise course incorporating a variety of exercises that stimulate heart and lung activity for a time period to produce beneficial changes in the body - running, walking, swimming, rope jumping, jogging, etc. PHED 014. Elementary Judo. 1 cr. Develops the fundamental abilities required in all aspects of Judo training including the technical, physical, and mental components. PHED 015. Advanced Judo. 1 cr. Designed to further develop the techniques of Judo on an advanced level. Prerequisite: PHED 014 PHED 016. Elementary Tae Kwon Do. 1 cr. Develops the fundamental techniques and abilities required in all aspects of Tae Kwon Do including the technical, physical, and mental components. PHED 017. Intermediate-Advanced Tae Kwon Do. 1 cr. Designed to further develop the techniques in all aspects of Tae Kwon Do on an advanced level. Prerequisite: PHED 016 PHED 018. Beginning Gymnastics. 1 cr. Designed to teach the basic skills of gymnastics on the floor and on apparatus. PHED 019. Advanced Gymnastics. 1 cr. Teaches advanced skills and techniques in tumbling, regular and special apparatus work, and related areas of gymnastic instruction. Co-ed. Prerequisite: PHED 018 or instructor’s consent. PHED 020. Major Gymnastics. 1 cr. Provides an opportunity for exposure to an understanding of the latest trends in men’s and women’s gymnastics from the novice to advanced level, including teaching techniques, skill progression, spotting techniques, and coaching hints. Co-ed. Prerequisite: PHED 018. PHED 021. Badminton. 1 cr. Provides the student with the basic knowledge, understanding, and skill necessary as a life time activity. PHED 024. Bowling. 1 cr. Develops a level of skill, knowledge and appreciation for bowling as a lifetime activity. PHED 025. Soccer Skills. 1 cr. Teaches the fundamental skills necessary for enjoyment of the game as a lifetime activity. PHED 026. Beginning Tennis. 1 cr. Designed to develop neuromuscular coordination, develop proficiency execution of basic fundamental skills and to develop physical fitness. PHED 027. Intermediate Tennis. 1 cr. Develops a degree of proficiency in execution of competitive skills. Prerequisite: PHED 026 PHED 028. Beginning Golf. 1 cr. Teaches the fundamentals of beginning golf, the terminology, history and development rules and etiquette; encompasses the basic grips, stance, putting, and club selection. PHED 030. Athletic Coaching/Sports Officiating I, Soccer/VB, II Football/BB Causes the student to move a dependent role in sports and athletics to a leadership role as a coach or game official. PHED 031. Skiing. 1 cr. General students learn the basic techniques of skiing. PHED 036. Methods of Teaching Individual and Team Sports II. 2 crs.
