ENGL 101. Survey of British Literature I. (Formerly ENGL 018) 3 crs. Study of literature from the Old English period to 1798. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 102. Survey of British Literature II. (Formerly ENGL 019) 3 crs. Study of literature from 1790 to the present. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 103. Survey of United States Literature. (Formerly ENGL 020) 3 crs. Presents a survey of American literature from its roots in the early 1600’s to the present. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.  

ENGL 107. Introduction to Women’s Studies. 3 crs. An introduction to the role of women in the humanities. Investigates women as authors and subjects in Philosophy, German, Russian, Classics, English, and the Romance Languages. In accordance with the interdisciplinary character of the course, its faculty will come from each of the disciplines above. Satisfies Divisional A Studies requirement.  

ENGL 110. Language Survey. 3 crs. Study of the nature and history of the English language. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 114. College Grammar. 3 crs. Presents an advanced comprehensive examination of English grammar, with special emphasis on terminology and constructions, the historical background of modern English grammar, and the contributions of the traditional, the structural, and the transformational-generative theories of grammar. College Grammar is neither a remedial nor a review course. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 125. Literary Criticism. 3 crs. An introduction to literary criticism, analyzes literary works and theories which underlie practical criticism. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 127. Creative Writing: Fiction. 3 crs. Designed for those students who have special literary projects they wish to present for criticism and refinement. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 128. Creative Writing: Poetry. 3 crs. See ENGL 127 for description. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 129. Advanced Essay Writing. 3 crs. Designed to help students review the theory and practice of traditional patterns of exposition and to improve their style and precision of thought and expression. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 152. African-American Drama. 3 crs. Explores the genre drama, through plays written in the twentieth century by African-Americans and produced on the professional stage. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 153. African-American Literature: Beginnings through Harlem Renaissance. 3 crs. Analysis of significant literary works, seen in relation to their times. For advanced students.

ENGL 154. African-American Literature: Post-Harlem Renaissance to the Present. 3 crs. Analysis of significant literary works, seen in relation to their times. For advanced students.

ENGL 156. United States Poetry. 3 crs. Study of the genre through selected American poems. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 158. British Poetry. 3 crs. Study of the genre through selected English poems. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 161. American Colonialism and Romanticism. 3 crs. Analyzes the individual and collective accomplishments of major writers. Prerequisites: ENGL 003, ENGL 103.

ENGL 162. American Realism and Naturalism. 3 crs. Treats selected works and major writers in the Realistic-Naturalistic Movement in America, from Mark Twain to the present. Prerequisites: ENGL 003, ENGL 103.

ENGL 163. {British Author.} 3 crs. Detailed critical study of a single selected British author. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 164. {American Author.} 3 crs. Detailed critical study of a single selected American author. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 165. {African-American Author.} 3 crs. Detailed critical study of a single selected African-American author. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 166. {Caribbean Author.} 3 crs. Detailed critical study of a single selected Caribbean author. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

ENGL 167. Shakespeare. 3 crs. Introduction to representative examples of Shakespeare’s plays, with some attention given to techniques of critical analysis. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.  

ENGL 168. Modern Caribbean Literature. 3 crs. Introduction to the scope, history, and cultural roots of Caribbean literature and its relationships to other literary traditions. Prerequisite: ENGL 003.

Noncredit Offerings

Students may avail themselves of the following tutorial services on a voluntary basis or through the recommendation of their instructor: The Writing Laboratory and the Tutorial Program. The Laboratory is an open facility designed to meet the needs of undergraduate and graduate students who have completed ENGL 002 and ENGL 003 but who still lack proficiency in expository writing. The Laboratory concentrates on patterns of exposition, organization and development of ideas, stylistic devices, and writing for the humanities and for the natural and social sciences. The tutorial program is designed for students enrolled in ENGL 002 and ENGL 003 who need additional help in developing and improving writing techniques and in achieving precision, accuracy, and effectiveness in written and/or oral expression.
