Supplementary drill in sentence structures and style, grammar, and mechanics. For students enrolled in ENGL 002 simultaneously. ENGL 002. Freshman Composition. 3 crs. Designed to develop the student’s ability to express ideas clearly and effectively in writing and to read with perception and accuracy. ENGL 003. Freshman Composition. 3 crs. Intended to increase the student’s ability to write effectively, to read critically, and to present ideas logically. ENGL 004. Freshman Composition. 3 crs. An extension of ENGL 003, designed to increase the student’s level of literacy in written communication — to develop the ability to write cogently and persuasively. Required for Arts and Sciences students who receive a grade of D in ENGL 003. ENGL 006. Intermediate Composition: Writing from Biography and Autobiography. 3 crs. Focuses on larger and complex elements of theme organization. Students will analyze and evaluate samples from biography and autobiography. Prerequisite: ENGL 003. ENGL 009. Technical Writing, Pre-Professional. 3 crs. Structured to develop the written and oral communication skills that students need for effective preparation for technical information. Prerequisite: ENGL 003. ENGL 010. Technical Writing for Pre-Law Students. 3 crs. Structured to help the student develop those reading, analytical, and writing skills necessary for admission to and successful performance in Law School. Prerequisite: ENGL 003. ENGL 011. Intermediate Composition: Current Events and Language. 3 crs. Designed to increase the student’s comprehension of the world by intensive analysis of techniques used by newspapers, magazines and journals, both American and foreign. Prerequisite: ENGL 003. ENGL 014. Introduction to Humanities I. 3 crs. The first part of two-semester core course for freshmen designed to enhance their understanding of great and enduring themes of humanistic inquiry. Students read literary and philosophical works of major historical significance and value from a contemporary viewpoint. Students explore themes such as cultural collision and resolution, concentrating on various aspects of the epic tradition. Satisfies the Div. A requirement for freshmen. ENGL 015. Introduction to Humanities II. 3 crs. The second part of a two-semester core course for freshmen. In this course students study the relationship of the self to the other, with all its attendant considerations, and concentrate on generic distinctions between comedy and tragedy in drama, autobiography, and fiction. Noncredit OfferingsStudents may avail themselves of the following tutorial services on a voluntary basis or through the recommendation of their instructor: The Writing Laboratory and the Tutorial Program. The Laboratory is an open facility designed to meet the needs of undergraduate and graduate students who have completed ENGL 002 and ENGL 003 but who still lack proficiency in expository writing. The Laboratory concentrates on patterns of exposition, organization and development of ideas, stylistic devices, and writing for the humanities and for the natural and social sciences. The tutorial program is designed for students enrolled in ENGL 002 and ENGL 003 who need additional help in developing and improving writing techniques and in achieving precision, accuracy, and effectiveness in written and/or oral expression. |
