College of Arts and Sciences - Academic ProgramsPolitical Science Majors in political science must complete 33 credit hours, including POLS 001, POLS 002, POLS 010 and one course from the following: POLS 004, POLS 701, POLS 190, POLS 191. Students may select any courses for which they have the prerequisites to complete the remaining 21 hours. A minor consists of 15 credit hours, which must include POLS 001. The remaining 12 credit hours should be selected in consultation with the student’s major field adviser. Pre-Law Concentration in Political Science Pre-Law students majoring in Political Science must complete the four-course core requirement (POLS 001, POLS 002, POLS 010), and one course from the following: POLS 004, POLS 701, POLS 190, POLS 191. The remaining 21 credits in departmental electives should be taken from the following courses: POLS 011, POLS 142, POLS 144, POLS 160, POLS 163, POLS 164, POLS 186, POLS 150, POLS 151. Psychology The psychology major consists of 39 semester hours, including PSYC 050, PSYC 051, PSYC 063, and either PSYC 064 or PSYC 120. Majors must also choose a minimum of five additional courses in the 100 series. Students should take Research Methods and Statistics I (PSYC 063) by the end of their sophomore year. The minor requirement for psychology majors may be satisfied by completion of five courses in any single undergraduate department of the university. Majors who plan to go to graduate school in psychology are strongly advised to elect additional courses in mathematics and the sciences. The minor sequence in Psychology for students in other departments depends upon whatever credit hours and choices of courses may be determined by the student’s major department. The sequence of courses, however, must be planned to fulfill any prerequisites. Social Sciences The primary objective of the social sciences program is to introduce the student to the various social science disciplines. Essentially designed for freshmen and sophomores, the integrated social sciences courses stress the interrelatedness of these disciplines in order to help the student to secure a better understanding of the nature of humans and contemporary society. The Social Sciences Program offers two courses: SOSC 011 and SOSC 012 in the Fall and Spring. Sociology A major in Sociology requires a total of 30 credit hours, including 12 credit hours of electives in Sociology and the following required courses: SOCI 001, SOCI 020, SOCI 100, SOCI 110, SOCI 111, and Anthropology ANTH 001 or ANTH-002. Sociology SOCI 001 is prerequisite to all other courses in sociology. The department offers major programs in Sociology, Anthropology, and the Administration of Justice. For detailed information on these programs, interested students should consult the chairman of the department. A minor in sociology must include SOCI 001 and at least 12 additional hours in sociology. Anthropology majors who are pursuing a minor in sociology must include at least 15 hours in addition to SOCI 001.
