Composition majors are accepted by audition as piano, voice or instrumental minors. Upon completion of the second-year requirements with a 3.0 GPA in all theory courses through MUSB-042, students will be admitted to the upper division in the composition programs. A public recital of original compositions will be required of all Composition majors.

Candidates for the Bachelor of Music in History and Literature must take a total of 133 credits in the following: Music Theory MUSB-003, MUSB-004, MUSB-011, MUSB-012, MUSB-016/116, MUSB-021, MUSB-022, MUSB-041, MUSB-042, MUSB-043, MUSB-124; Music History MUSC-005, MUSC-006, MUSC-007, MUSC-008, MUSC-125, MUSC-103, MUSC-104, MUSC-105, MUSC-106, MUSC-155, MUSC-161; Student Recital MUTO-011, MUTO-012, MUTO-021, MUTO-022, MUTO-031, MUTO-032, MUTO-041, MUTO-042; Piano MUSE-111, MUSE-112, MUSE-121, MUSE-122, MUSE-131, MUSE-132, MUSE-141, MUSE-142. Electives 12 hours (including Blacks in the Arts); Related Courses - Art ARTH 161; World History HIST 001; English ENGL 002 and ENGL 003; German GERM 001, and GERM 002; French FREN 001 and FREN 002; Classics CLAS 030; 8 credits of Ensemble; and 2 credits of Physical Education or Dance.

Students will not be permitted to elect history as a major until they have completed MUSC-005 and MUSC-006 with grades of B or better. Students who major in the history of music must meet the requirements for a minor in piano and must appear creditably on student recitals in this subject. Candidates for graduation will be required to pass an oral examination before a music faculty committee. Students must maintain a B average in their major subject. At least two major projects must relate to an aspect of the black heritage in music.

Candidates for the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy  degree must take a total of 135 credits in the following: Principal Instrument/Voice 111, 112, 121, 122, 131, 132; Minor Instrument/Voice 011, 012, 021, 022, 031, 032 (Functional piano is required for Voice and Instrumental minors) Music MUSB-003, MUSB-004, MUSB-011, MUSB-012 MUSB-016, MUSB-021, MUSB-022, MUSB-041, MUSB-042, MUSB-103, MUSC-007, MUSC-008, MUSD-051, MUSG-011 (for non-voice minors), MUSG-155 (voice minors only), MUTO-011, MUTO-012, MUTO-021, MUTO-022, MUTO-031, MUTO-032, MUTO-041, MUTO-042 and MUTP-100; Music Therapy MUSJ-101, MUSJ-102, MUSJ-105, MUSJ-107, MUSJ-110, MUSJ-115, MUSJ-120, MUSJ-121, MUSJ-135; Psychology 022-050, 022-116; Education 140-153; Sociology 025-001, 025-030, 025-061; Drama 490-071; Anthropology 027-002; English ENGL 002, ENGL 003; Anatomy 082-102; Ensemble electives - 8 credits; Psychology elective - 3 credits; General Education electives - 6 credits (3 crs. must be foreign language for voice minors).

Music Therapy majors are accepted as piano, voice or instrumental minors by audition. Senior recital or case study and successful completion of internship are required for graduation.

Music Therapy Senior Case Study: A comprehensive video taped case study, to include a semester of documented clinical work be accepted as an option to the current senior recital requirement for graduation. Materials would be evaluated by the Music Therapy Coordinator, the clinical site supervisor and one outside music therapist. All materials would be submitted to the coordinator no later than (4) weeks prior to the end of the semester for review and recommendations. Students must be enrolled in Senior Practicum MUSJ-121 in order to choose this option.

Candidates for the Certificate in Music Therapy will have individualized programs that meet the criteria for the bachelor of music in Music Therapy. A degree in music is required for acceptance into this program.
