Department of Art

Studio Majors

Painting, photography, printmaking, design, ceramics, sculpture, and experimental studio majors must take a total of 128 credit hours. Following is a list of the required courses according to semester and year:

First Year: Fall Semester - Two-Dimensional Concepts I ARTF 087, Three-Dimensional Concepts I ARTF 089, Art History ARTH 164, African American elective, Drawing ARTF 001, English ENGL 002, Freshman Seminar FRSM 001; Spring Semester - Two-Dimensional Concepts II ARTF 088, Three-Dimensional Concepts II ARTF 090, Art History ARTH 165, Drawing ARTF 002, English ENGL 003, Photography ARTP 050.

Second Year: Fall Semester - 3 courses in major area of concentration and elective area; one 3-credit Arts and Sciences course from Division B and one from Division D (or Computer in the Arts ARTE-114), Drawing III ARTD 003; Spring Semester - 3 courses in major area of concentration, art and university elective areas, Computer in the Arts (or one 3-credit Arts and Sciences course from Division D).

Third Year: Fall Semester - 2 courses in major area, African American Art History I ARTH 178, a 3-credit humanities elective, an art elective. Spring Semester - 2 courses in major area, studio elective, African American Art History II ARTH 179, Arts and Sciences course from Division D, humanities elective.

Fourth Year: Fall Semester - 3 courses in major area, Communications (Speech) HUCO 101, a 3-credit university elective; Spring Semester - 2 courses in major area, a 3-credit university elective, an art elective.

Art History

Art History majors must fulfill a foreign language requirement. Students must offer one foreign language through the intermediate level (Language IV). If they wish to continue a language begun in high school, they may be given advanced placement on the basis of their score on the CEEB or the Howard University Placement Test. If students qualify for advanced placement they still must complete the required total of credits for the degree. They may substitute university courses from any area in place of the released hours, but are advised to work in a second language. Art History majors must take a total of 126 credits, including the following courses according to semester and year.

First Year: Fall Semester - Two D Concepts I, ARTF 008, Three D Concepts I, ARTF 089, Survey of Visual Arts I, ARTH 164, ENGL 002, Foreign Language, Freshman Seminar FRSM-001; Spring Semester: Introduction to Photography ARTP 050, Survey of Visual Arts II, ARTH 162, ENGL 003, Foreign Language, Black Diaspora HIST 005.

Second Year: Fall Semester - Art History ARTH 162, ARTH 167, ARTH 178, Arts and Sciences Division B, Arts and Sciences Division D or Computer in the Arts, a foreign language; Spring Semester - Art History ARTH 179, ARTH 185, ARTH 174, Arts and Sciences Division B or Computer in the Arts (Division D), University or Art Elective.

Third Year: Fall Semester - Art History ARTH 170, Art History elective, Methods of Art History, Humanities elective or foreign language, Arts and Sciences Division D; Spring Semester - ARTH 171, two Art History electives, Humanities elective, Studio elective.

Fourth Year: Fall Semester - Art History ARTH 181, three Art History electives, University elective; Spring Semester - Art History ARTH 182, two Art History electives, University elective, Art elective.

Art Management

Art Management majors take a total of 126 credits as follows:

First Year: Fall Semester - Art ARTH 164, ARTF 001, ARTF 087, ARTF 089 English ENGL 002, PSCH 050, Freshman Seminar-001; Spring Semester - Art ARTH 165, ARTF 002, ARTF 090, English ENGL 003, ECON 001, African American elective, (Freshman Level).

Second Year: Fall Semester - ARTH 178, FASH 070, ARTS 154, ACCT 201, ECON 002, Math; Spring Semester - ARTH 162, ARTH 179, ACCT 202, HIST 010, Art Studio elective (sophomore level);

Third year: Fall Semester - ARTA 011 or ARTS 141, Art History elective, Management MGMT 301, Art ARTD 114, Computer in the Arts, Statistics, Finance FINA 311; Spring Semester - Art ARTA 012 or ARTP 032 or ARTS-142, Art History elective, Marketing MKTG 311, Management BLEC 305, MGMT 303, MGMT 304;

Fourth year: Fall Semester - Art History, Internship in Art, Business of Art, Psychology PSYC 020; Spring Semester - Fine Arts Valuation, Internship in Art Management, Business of Art, Art History elective, Independent Study in Art Management.

Fashion Merchandising

Fashion Merchandising majors must take a total of 126 credits, including the following courses according to semester and year.

First Year: Fall Semester - Introduction to the Fashion Industry FASH 004, Two Dimensional Concepts I ARTF 087, Drawing I ARTF 001 or Fashion Illustration FASH 163, English ENGL 002, Survey of Visual Arts ARTH 164 and Freshman Seminar-001. Spring Semester - Fashion Elective, Fashion Illustration FASH 164, Two Dimensional Concepts II ARTF 088, Drawing II ARTF 002, English ENGL 003, and Survey of Visual Arts II ARTH 162.

Second Year: Fall Semester - Textiles FASH 124, Economics I 006-101, Statistics 025-110, Textile Design FASH 182, Speech HUCO 101 and a Fashion elective.

Third Year: Fall Semester - Principles of Reasoning PHIL 051, Principles of Marketing MKTG 311, African American Dress FASH 102, Fashion elective and a course in the minor; Spring Semester - Cultural Anthropology ANYH 002, Retailing MKTG 318, Clothing in History FASH 186, two courses in the minor and a Fashion elective.

Fourth Year: Fall Semester - Sociology 025-001, a Fashion elective, two courses in the minor and a general elective; Spring Semester - two electives, a course in the minor and Fieldwork FASH 169.

Interior Design

Interior Design majors must take a total of 126 credits, including the following courses according to semester and year.

First Year: Fall Semester - Survey of Visual Arts I, ARTH 164, English ENGL 002, Environmental Factors of Int. Des. INTD 098, Fundamental Drafting of Interiors INTD 100, Historic Interiors INTD 102, Freshman Seminar-001; Spring Semester - Survey of Visual Arts II, ARTH 165, English ENGL 003, Two D Concepts ARTF 088, Advanced Drafting Techniques INTD 101, Contemporary Interiors INTD 103.

Second Year: Fall Semester - Construction of Interior Spaces INTD 104, CADD for Interiors INTD 106, Interior Graphics and Rendering INTD 108, Economics ECON 001, Textiles INTD 124; Spring Semester - Model Bldg. INTD 105, Presentation Techniques INTD 107, Residential Interior Design INTD 111, Speech HOCO 101, Anthropology ANTH 002, course in minor #1.

Third Year: Fall Semester - Advanced Residential Int. Design INTD 112, Business Aspects of Int. Design INTD 114, Lighting of Interior Spaces INTD 116, Math MATH 001, course in minor #2; Spring Semester - Office Interior Design INTD 113, Interior Design INTD 113, Interior Design Practicum INTD 115, Sociology SOCI 001, Philosophy PHIL 015, course in minor #3.
